Papers of Fellows and Mountford.

Papers relating to the Fellows and Mountford collection. They comprise mainly photographs and accompanying papers, mostly inventory lists. The first 6 folders contain photographs of index cards that were in possession of the ceramicist Allan Lowe, whose work is held in the NGA collection. Another 8 folders contain photographs of Papua New Guinean (Pacific Island) objects taken by Reverend Samuel Fellows. The collection of artefacts represented in these photgraphs were from the Institute of Anatomy and are now at the National Museum where they are deep in storage and difficult to access as described by the curator of Pacific Arts, Crispin Howarth. The paper documentation of this collection comprises mainly lists and inventories of artefacts from Papua New Guinea, the Marquesas Islands and other areas collected by various people.

Samuel Benjamin Fellows was born in Derbyshire, England in 1858, and migrated to New Zealand in 1883. He trained for the ministry in Auckland, 1885-1888. In 1890, he joined the Rev. Dr. W. E. Bromilow in the establishment of the first Methodist mission at Dobu, British New Guinea, but soon moved to Panaeati where he remained until 1893. He was stationed at Kiriwina in the Trobriands from 1894 until he left the mission in 1901. From the description of Papers of Samuel Benjamin Fellows...
